Although every week that passes in pregnancy is one to celebrate as it truly is a special journey, week 10 is one that stands out. At this point of the pregnancy, baby has completed the most critical portion of development – meaning the risk of miscarriage significantly lowers and if baby at this point is considered ‘significantly healthy’, chances are that he/she will continue to have a healthy, progressive development throughout the remaining 30 weeks.
From now onwards, the tissues and organs will rapidly start to mature, baby weighs about a quarter of an ounce and is the size of a kumquat, those yummy little orange fruits, although they won’t be staying this small for long, in the upcoming weeks baby will almost double in size. At this point, baby is already kicking, somersaulting all around the playground which is your womb, but these movements are yet to be felt for a long time. As well as this, baby is swallowing fluid and the vital organs -kidneys, brains, intestines and liver are all in place and starting to function.
So how are the mommy’s feeling? Well before we got pregnant, our uterus was roughly the size of a pear, maybe even smaller for first time momma’s, by this week it is already the size of a grapefruit and we’re only a quarter of the way there yet! So yeah, my jeans were feeling pretty uncomfortable already even though you there is no physical sign of pregnancy showing on my body yet. This time round, my breasts didn’t grow as they did with my first pregnancy but growing breasts is also extremely common at this point of pregnancy. On a plus note, the sickness starts wearing, so no more acid damage to our pearly whites, however, in it’s place is the nausea, which only made me wonder, did I prefer throwing up or did I prefer feeling like I was on a rocky boat non-stop, either way as momma’s we don’t really have a choice, so just keep the idea that first trimester is so nearly over to get through the next couple of weeks.
Although I have tried working out throughout the whole pregnancy and I cannot stress enough the importance of doing even the most minimal of workouts during pregnancy, it must be taken into consideration in order to ensure that you are providing your body with the rest it needs and are not exerting yourself, that you listen to your body. During this week, I felt so tired and rough from the nausea that I took a week off from gym and when I could tried to catch an extra hour of sleep here and there (thank you husband) – not to mention that at this point of the pregnancy Ayan was still an all night kind of breastfeeding baby (can it get more tiring than that)
So yeah, thats a brief overview of week 10, first trimester nearly complete, soon onto the craziness of the second 😉
